Pipe selection and laying related important points

a. The installation piping (from pump house up to installation valve and also the installation piping with sprinklers) shall be capable of withstanding for two hours a pressure equivalent to 150% of maximum working pressure.

b. All installation pipe work above ground shall be installed at a slope not less than 1:500 for horizontal run of pipes.

c. Sprinkler pipes shall be supported from the building structure which itself shall be capable of supporting the water filled pipe work.

d. The thickness of all parts of pipe supports shall not be less than 3 mm.

e. The distance between pipe supports measured along the line of connected pipes shall not be less than as below.

i. Up to 65 mm dia. 4.0 m.

ii. 65 to 100 mm dia. 6.0 m

iii. 100 to 250 mm dia. 6.5 m.

f. Distribution pipes.

i. The first support on a nominally horizontal distribution pipe shall not be at more than 2 m from the main distribution pipe.

ii. The last support on a nominally horizontal distribution pipe shall not be more than 450 mm from the end.

iii Drop or rise pipe shall be secured to the building structure citer directly or indirectly at the adjacent nominally horizontal part of the pipe within 300 mm of the drop or rise.

g. Range pipes

i. Al least one support shall be provided for.

a. Each pipe run connecting adjacent sprinkler.

b. The pipe run connecting the distribution pipe and the first sprinkler on the range pipe.

ii. Pipe supports shall not be closer than 150 mm to any sprinkler axial central line.

iii. The first support on a range pipe shall not be more than 2 m from the distribution pipe.

iv. The last support on a range pipe shall not be at more than 1.5 m from

a. The range pipe end.

b. Where there is a horizontal arm pipe of 450 mm or longer, the arm pipe end.

c. Where there is a drop or rise exceeding 600 mm, the drop or rise pipe end.

h. Outgoing mains from the installation valve to the system shall be supported at every 3.5 m of its run.

i. The thickness of all components used in pipe supports shall not be less than 3 mm anywhere.

Remarks: For a light hazard building of 10,000 sq m area. The pump capacity shall be designed on the basis of flow requirement calculations for the AMAO, hydraulically most favourable location i.e. for 84 m² area only. This is because, fire is not expected to take place at all the places simultaneously.
