The method of causing an elevator to move in response to demands for service is known as the operating system. With the increasing demand for an efficient elevator system as the number of storeys in a building increases, it became very essential to operate the system in close unison within and with external demands. The various types of operating systems are as follow.

Single Automatic Operation

This consists of single buttons at each landing and a button for each floor in a car operating panel. This system has one call button for each elevator on each floor. This type of system is used for exclusive use of elevators like for light traffic buildings.

Full Selective Collective

The collective operation, as the name implies, is a mean to collect and answer all the calls in one direction, reverse the elevator, and then collect and answer all the calls in opposite direction.

A variation of selective collective is "down collective" when only down hall buttons are provided at each upper floor. This can be acceptable in an apartment house, in which most people want service up to their apartments from the lobby (up car calls) and down to the lobby from their floors (down hall calls).

Duplex Collective

Two cars selective collective operation is accomplished by duplexing, hence the name duplex collective.

In this system, one of the two cars is designated as the home landing car. It can be either car or change after each trip. The other car is called "Free" and may park at its last call or some designated landing (middle free car parking), or in a designated upper area of the building. The home-landing car is designated to respond to any hall call at the lobby or basement floor any call above the lobby or in a designated area. Thus, both the cars work in unison with each other and provide the most efficient service to the user.

Group Automatic Operation

The automatic operation of two or more non-attendant elevators equipped with power operated car and hoist way doors.

The operation of the cars is coordinated by a supervisory control system including automatic dispatching means whereby selected cars at designated dispatching points automatically close their doors and proceed on their trips in a regulated manner. The passengers are served by one set of up and down buttons at each landing, for a group of elevators. The stops set up by the momentary actuation of the landing buttons may be accomplished by any elevator in the group and are made automatically by the first available car that approaches the landing in the corresponding direction.

The supervisory control system is capable of changing the coordination of cars according to the different needs of traffic at different times of day, i.e. it includes scheduling feature.
