Green buildings consciously imbibe material which are environmentally friendly. The steady increase in demand for green buildings has brought down the cost of green products, services and materials, thus making green buildings affordable.

The extraction of material, their processing and transportation to distant sites of construction has a great Environmental impact, for it causes air and water pollution, destroys natural habitat, commutes energy and depletes natural resources.

To minimise the impact of construction activities, the best strategy would be to rouse the existing buildings with minor modifications, utilize waste material from landfills, thus reducing burden of extraction of more and more natural Resources, utilize local produce as this will reduce transportation cost and support economy for the local population In addition, utilization of renewable materials minimise the impact on natural Various measures that can be taken to achieve the objective are:

a. Reduction in waste generation to reduce load on land fill sites.

b. Segregation waste materials at site by providing separate storage bins so that recycling can be done at site itself but if required to dispose off, then it is convenient to recycle oft-site

Reuse of waste material can be done either by using recyclable equipments, or diverting them to manufacturing or best to other construction sites where they can be reused.

c. Install recycling equipments to recycle aluminium cast, steel, plastic, wood and paper.

d. When renovating a building or constructing a new building, retain, identify and utilize existing building with modifications wherever required to reduce burden on natural resources and energy intensive manufacturing, This can be dome in a variety of ways, say by utilizing outer shell, partly utilizing outer shell and partly non-shell, or furniture and furnishing items, Various items such as wood flooring and panelling, doors and frames bricks, beams, decorative items, antique light fixtures, chandeliers can be reused.

e. Train workers and staff on the benefits and procedure of segregation for recycling.

f. In the bill of material, specify those items which are made from recyclable material.

g. Specify those materials in contract which are produced within the region of construction. Thus supporting local economy and reducing energy on transportation.

h. Plan to use those materials which are fast renewable compared to those which are not e.g. bamboo, cotton, wool, linoleum, wheat board, etc.

Green building movement in India is encouraging lot of innovations in the field of eco-friendly materials and technologies. Some of them are:

1. High performance glass

2. Fly ash brick

3. Aerated concrete blocks

4. Insulated roofs

5. Pre-fabricated and pre-engineered buildings

6. Light pipe

7. Radiant cooling

8. Building integrated photo voltaic (BIPV)

9. Wind turbines

10. Living walls

11. Geothermal technology

12. Solar air conditioning system
