Work procedure

Setting Out

  • A temporary bench mark (TBM) to be established
  • The ground levels shall be taken at 5 to 10 meter intervals in uniformly sloping ground and at closer intervals where local mounds, pits or undulations are met with.

Marking of plan size of likely excavation pit

  • Mark on ground area to be excavated including working space margin & slope stabilization.

Excavation Procedure:

  • Top soil (300mm) to be retained within the premises as per LEED require, if any.
  • If practicable, to retain soil as much as possible for backfilling at a later date to avoid extra expenditure.
  • To Plan the excavating quantity of soil with in the scheduled time. Machinery has to be deployed as per the requirement.
  • Logistic schedule has prepared the quantity of soil to be excavated from the buildings footprint and working areas every day for the excavation period. Transportation of the bulk material has been assumed per truck basis, i.e. how many truck moves out of the site are required.
  • Excavation shall be undertaken to the width of the Basement/Retaining wall footing including necessary margins for construction operation as per drawing or directed otherwise. Where the nature of soil or the depth of the trench and season of the year, do not permit vertical sides, it shall put up the necessary shoring, strutting and planking or cut slopes with or without steps, to a safer angle.
  • If practicable, stock soil quantity required later for backfilling around foundation which shall be dumped as specified above.
  • In the area where works are under execution water table low enough so as not to cause any harm to the work like pumping out or bailing out water, if required, this will include water coming from any source, such as rains, accumulated rain water, floods, leakages from sewer and water mains, subsoil water table being high or due to any other cause whatsoever. It shall make necessary provision of pumping(of adequate Capacity), dredging bailing out water coming from all above sources and excavation and other works shall be kept free of water by providing suitable system approved by the Engineer-in-charge.
  • The water level is likely to rise up to 1 to 2 m. during rainy season. In order to avoid possibility of basement floor of main building being getting uplifted/damaged due to water pressure, shall lower the ground water table below the proposed foundation level by boring tube wells all around the proposed building using well point sinking method or any suitable method as approved by Engineer-in-charge. Sub soil water table shall be maintained at least 50 cm. below the P.C.C. level during laying of P.C.C. water proofing treatment, laying of basement raft and beams including filling of earth/sand under the basement floor. The water table shall not be allowed to rise above base of raft level until completion of outer retaining walls including water proofing of vertical surface of walls and back filling along the walls upto ground level and until the structure attains such height to counter balance the uplift pressure.
  • Continue excavation with excavator till about 30 cm above final excavation level. Excavate dress and level this last portion manually.
  • When final level of excavation is reached light mechanical compactor will be used with sprinkling of water where excavation is dry to have a compacted top surface of excavation for further work to proceed.
  • Any loose or soft bed encountered in excavation at the required depth, shall be excavated to a firm bed and difference made upto the required level with PCC or shall be compacted and tested to 95% of MDD.
  • The shoring and strutting of the sides to withhold the face of excavation pits/trenches shall be done as approved from safety points of view.
  • Final excavated levels of the foundations shall be recorded.
  • Area shall be suitable barricading with suitably painted of GI. Sheets or as specified.

Precautions

  • Adequate protective measures shall be taken to see that the excavation operations do not damage the adjoining structures or dislocate the services. Water supply pipes, sluice valve chambers, sewerage pipes, manholes, drainage pipes and chambers, communication cables, power supply cables etc. met with in the course of excavation shall be properly supported and adequately protected, so that these services remain functional.
  • Excavation shall not be carried out below the foundation level of the adjacent buildings until underpinning, shoring etc.
