The lap length is the length two rebar pieces must overlap and be tied together to create a bond as if there is no break and the run is continuous and to safely transfer the load from one bar to another bar.
We consider average length of a rebar is 12 m but in construction we required less or more lengths as per drawing and element requirement for safe and easy to work.
As per recommendation, in beams we avoid lapping of top bars at supports and avoid lapping of bottom bars at centre of span.
For flexural tension we consider LD or 30 x dia whichever is greater as specified by structural designer
For direct tension we consider 2LD or 30 x dia whichever is greater as specified by structural designer
Lap Length in compression shall be equivalent to the development length computed but not less than 24d
Lap in compression member allowed in middle zone and stagger 50% of bars but due to some specific reason we can lap in end zone with lap length 1.25LD after consultation of structural designer.
