Statement of problem

From samples prepared for various phases i.e. (a), (b) and (c) of slump test, select one sample from cach and fill in beam mould 15 - 15 - 70 cm from each, thus preparing total 6 samples, and them for 28 days in prescribed manner.

Determine (flexure strength for each specimen.

Theory

The knowledge of tensile strength in concrete is of value in estimating the load under which crackling will develop. The absence of cracking is of considerable importance in maintaining the contain ity of a concrete structure and preventing corrosion of reinforcement Maximum tensile stress reached in the bottom fibre of the test beam is known as 'Modulus of Rupture of concrete (Refer IS 456).

Apparatus (Fig 10.4)

• Standard beam mould I5 x 15 x 70 cm for aggregate size up to 30 mm. If the largest size of the aggregate does not exceed 20 mm, the size may be 10 x 10 x 50 cm. For detailed fication, see IS: 516.

• Tamping bar

• Trowels

• Hand scoop

• Universal testing machine capable of applying load at suitable rate (4 KN/minute for 150 mm specimens and 1.8 KN/minute for 100 mm specimens)

Procedure

(a) Method of filling the mould, curing and measuring the dimensions is the same as is done for the compressive strength test.

(b) Place the specimen in the testing machine such that the load shall be applied to the upper Most surface as cast in mould, along middle third points spaced 20 cm or 13.3 cm apart Fig. 10.4). The axis of the specimen shall be carefully aligned with the axis of the loading device. No packing shall be used between the bearing surfaces of the specimen and the rollers.

(c) Apply load carefully without shock and increasing continuously at a rate of 400 kg/min for 15.0 cm specimen and at the rate of 180 ky/min for 10 cm specimen. The load increased until the specimen fails and the maximum load applied to the specimen during the test shall be recorded.

(d) Measure the distance between the line of fracture and the nearer support ‘a’. Note if ‘a’ is greater than 200 mim for 150 mm specimen or greater than 133 mm for 100 mm specimen

(e) Determine the modulus of rupture (flexure strength) by formula fb=p x 1/bd2, when ‘a’ is greater than 200 mm for 150 mm specimens (or 'a' is greater than 133 mm for 100 mm specimens) or fb 3px a/bd2 N/mm when a is less than 200 mm but more than 150 mm specimens (or ‘a" is lesser tan 133 mm for 100 mm specimens). P is maximum load in N (kg). b, d, I are width, depth and span of the beam respectively all in mm. If ‘a' is less than 170 mm for 150 mm specimen or less than 110 mm for 100 mm specimen. The results of the tests are to be discarded.

Precautions

(a) The loading should be applied centrally and without subjecting the specimen to any torsional stresses or restraints.

(b) The axis of the specimen shall be carefully aligned with the axis of the loading device.

(c) No packing shall be used between the bearing surfaces of the specimen and the roles.

(d) The load shall be applied without shock and increasing continuously at the specified rate.

(e) The load shall be correctly measured at the time of development of cracks.

(f) The location of cracks shall be correctly measured from the supports.
