Procedure for Determination Standard consistency of Cement

Theory:

Cement paste is nominal consistency defined as percentage of water by weight of cement which produces a consistency which permits a plunger of 10 mm dia to penetrate up to a depth of 5 mm to 7 mm above the bottom of Vicat’s Mould.

Before performing the test for initial setting time, final setting time, compressive strength tensile strength and soundness of cement etc. it is necessary to fix the quality of water to be mixed to prepare a paste of cement of standard consistency in each case. The quality of water to be added in each of the above mentioned experiment bears a definite relation with the percentage of water of standard consistency. This experiment is intended to find out for given cement, the quality of water to be mixed to give a paste of standard consistency.

Percentage of water in the cement paste ‘P’ for standard consistency will vary from cement to cement and from batch to batch of the same cement, and the quantities of water used in the other tests will vary accordingly. Following are the quantities of water required for various tests:

  1. Quantities of water for setting time test expressed as percentage of weight of cement
  2. Quantities of water for soundness test expressed as percentage of weight of cement

    (a) Le Chatelier method

    (b) Autoclave method

  3. Quantities of water for compressive strength on 1: 3 cement and standard sand mortar expressed as percentage of weight of weight of dry cement and aggregate =P/4 +3.0 where P is percentage of water for standard consistency.

Aim: To determine standard consistency of Cement.

Significance: It is a parameter which is used to find out initial & final setting time and soundness of cement. This gives percentage of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency.

Definition: The area of cement particles of particular cement weight.

Apparatus:

  • Vicat apparatus, (Mould dia.: 80 mm, Height: 40 mm)Pan
  • Weights & Balance
  • Towel
  • Plunger (10mm dia. & 50 mm long)

Procedures:

  • Take about 400 gm of cement and prepare a paste with a Take sample on an IS 90 micron Sieve.
  • Take about 400 gm of cement and prepare a paste with a weighed quantity of water. (Say, 25% to 35% by weight of cement.
  • The paste must be prepared in a standard manner and filled into the vicat mould within 3 to 5 minutes.
  • After completely filling the mould, shake the mould to explae air
  • A plunger attached and brought down to touch the surface of the paste in the test block and quickly released allowing it to sink in to the paste by its own weight.
  • Take the reading by noting the depth of penetration of the plunger
  • Similarly, conduct trials with higher and higher W/C ratio till such time the plunger penetrates for a depth of 5 to 7 mm from the bottom.
  • That particular percentage of water which allows the plunger to penetrate only to a depth of 5 to 7 mm from the bottom is known as the percentage of water required to produce a cement paste of standard consistency.
  • This percentage is usually denoted as `P’ makes an impression on the paste but the circular cutting edge of the setting time.
